Finding Affordable Child Care

How to find affordable child care in your state

When you have young children deciding whether or not to put your children in child care can be a difficult decision.  I you are a 2 person household you often have to weigh the cost of child care against the income of the 2nd person working. In some instances it may not make sense for both people to work. But if you are a single person raising a child, child care is almost always essential unless you are lucky enough to have family who can watch your children for you.

Most states have child care assistance programs. These programs can be a life saver to parents. It can make a huge difference in the amount of money you have to pay out of pocket. Having help can highly improve your quality of life. Child care without assistance could run over $200 per week in some states making parents have to choose between child care expenses or other necessary things.

Keep in mind that there are income limit requirements and applications that you have to fill out, but most can be done online now. You have to be working and be able to prove it. Sometimes there are waiting lists because most of these programs are government funded and they have to wait for funding to come in. If you do not need assistance, you should not apply. There is limited funding and should be used for people who truly do need it!

I was a single mom and I used my states program when my child was not school age and now my adult child uses this program for her child. I am so thankful that I was able to utilize this program because without it, I would not have been able to work and pay rent. It truly was a life saver for me and highly reduced my stress and worry.

Each state program is different, but I was able to locate a website in which you can find your states' child care program.

Find the information here.

Below are the steps to locate the information for your states' child care program:

1. Once you click on the link above you will see the box below, choose your state and hit submit.

2. After you choose your state, look at the left side of the page. There will be a box that says Understanding and Finding Childcare. Choose the link that says Financial Assistance for Families - I have highlighted the option.
